How we evaluate gold
Every gold offer starts with two numbers you can see for yourself: purity and weight. Matthew tests the karat of each piece and weighs it in front of you, then works from the market price for gold that day.
Some pieces are worth more than their metal. Matthew also looks at:
- Condition
- Design and craftsmanship
- Brand or maker
- Diamonds and gemstones set in the piece
- Collectibility, especially for gold coins
- Potential resale value
He tells you which of these apply to your pieces before he makes an offer, so you know how the number was reached.

Yes. Broken chains, bent rings, single earrings and scrap gold are all welcome. Plain gold is valued by purity and weight, so a broken chain is still worth its gold.
How do you know what karat my gold is?
Many pieces are stamped, for example 10K, 14K or 18K, or 417, 585 or 750. Matthew checks the stamp and confirms it with a test at your table.
How is a gold offer calculated?
From the purity, the weight and the market price for gold that day, plus anything that adds value beyond the metal, such as stones or a known maker. Matthew walks you through it.
Do you buy gold-filled or gold-plated jewelry?
No. These have only a thin layer of gold. Matthew can tell you which of your pieces are solid gold.
Do I have to sell everything?
No. You decide piece by piece. Sell all of it, some of it or none of it.
