What silver do we buy?

Silver-plated pieces, often marked EP, EPNS or silver plate, have only a thin layer of silver. Matthew will tell you which of your pieces are solid silver.

  • Silver jewelry
  • Sterling silver flatware and serving pieces, in sets or single pieces
  • Silver coins
  • Silver bars and rounds
  • Items marked .925, .999 or Sterling
  • Broken, unwanted or inherited silver

Door-cash was awesome, was getting rid of some old jewelry and they took great care of me. No hassle and gave me more than other places were offering. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to get rid of old jewelry!

What determines silver value?

  • PuritySterling is 92.5% silver (.925). Fine silver bars and rounds are usually .999.
  • WeightMatthew weighs your silver in front of you.
  • Market priceSilver prices change daily, and the offer is based on that day.
  • Item typeFlatware, jewelry, coins and bullion are each looked at differently.
  • ConditionMostly matters for coins and finished pieces.
  • Collectibility, maker and brandSome pieces have value beyond their silver.
  • Resale potentialWhether a piece could be sold as it is.

For most sterling flatware and scrap silver, purity and weight do most of the work. For coins and pieces by known makers, the other factors can matter more.

Silver coins

Some silver coins are worth more than the silver they contain. Age, mint mark, condition and rarity can add collector value. That is why we look at coins one at a time instead of weighing them as a pile. Read more about how we evaluate coins.

How do I know if something is sterling?

Look for a mark such as Sterling, .925 or 925, often on the back of a utensil or the clasp of a piece of jewelry. Matthew confirms it with a test.

Is silver-plated flatware worth anything?

Usually very little as silver, because the silver layer is thin. Matthew can check your set and tell you whether it is sterling or plated.

Do you buy a full set of flatware?

Yes. Full sets, partial sets and single pieces are all fine.

Do you buy silver bars and rounds?

Yes. Bars and rounds are evaluated by purity and weight, starting from that day’s silver price.

Should I sort my silver before the visit?

No. Set everything out and Matthew will sort it with you.

How are silver prices set?

Silver trades on the market and its price changes every day. Your offer is based on the price on the day of your appointment.
